It Takes A Village

This past December, we ran a special “It Takes a Village” campaign. Donors who gave received a handcrafted Villager Set as a thank-you. We have a small number of sets remaining.

This February, as a thank-you for supporting our Special Needs Center with $300+, we’d love to share a Villager Set with you.

Please note “Villager Set” with your donation (or email us). Available while supplies last.

Our It Takes a Village set includes six birch wood peg villagers handpainted with non-toxic, child-safe paint. The villagers reflect the roles a community leans on: the Healer, Builder, Guide, Provider, Dreamer, and Welcomer. Each villager sits in a handmade pine holder with a wood-burned engraving.

Each set carries a story.

The trays were cut and sanded, the peg holes carefully drilled, and each villager handpainted by Yazidis who have lived through displacement in Iraq and are finding their way forward again. This project created local income and offered meaningful work shaped by care and mentorship.

Meet the Villagers

  • Healer

Brings care to places that ache

  • Builder

    Creates what’s needed

  • Guide

    Gives wisdom and direction

  • Provider

    Meets daily needs with consistency

  • Dreamer

    Imagines new possibilities

  • Welcomer

    Brings belonging

Together, the villagers offer a quiet reminder of what becomes possible when people choose to stand with one another.

They reflect the heart of Habibi’s work: steady presence, shared strength, and the kind of community that shows up for others. It is a keepsake that reminds us that rebuilding is a shared journey and each of us has a part in it.

As part of this campaign, U.S. donors who give $300 or more will receive the complete six-piece Village Set as our thank-you gift.

Your generosity strengthens long-term work across three centers: Bersive Community Center, Chamishku Community Center, and Ronahî Children’s Institute, our early intervention center for special needs.

FAQs

  • Each set was handcrafted by Yazidi boys and their sisters in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. They are displaced young people who partnered with our team to learn this skill through Habibi International’s livelihood and mentorship program. Many of their families have been part of our community since 2017.

Their work is relational. They know who they are making these for, and they take joy in knowing the sets will represent their community’s creativity and strength. Each set is made in small batches, shaped through patience, shared stories, and a steady commitment to rebuilding life with dignity.

  • Because each Villager Set is handcrafted, the peg dolls and the holder are matched by fit. The holes were individually sanded, so each villager fits best in a specific spot. Please place them in this order:

    Healer • Builder • Guide • Provider • Dreamer • Welcomer

Once they’re in that order, they should fit smoothly.

  • Each set is handmade. Variations in color, detail, and finish are natural and reflect the individual who worked on your set.

  • We can only ship to U.S. addresses at this time. Eligible donors within the United States will receive one set while supplies last.

  • Yes. Each piece is painted with non-toxic, child-safe paint and sealed with a water-based Mod Podge finish commonly used for children’s crafts. We still recommend supervision for young children because of small parts.

  • Shipping timelines vary. Please email us if you have a timing concern.

  • Each qualifying donation of $300 or more is eligible for one set. Additional sets are not guaranteed due to limited supply.

  • Each peg doll is approximately 2⅜ inches tall and ⅞ inch in diameter.

  • Participants were paid for their work and learned a new skill as part of our ongoing mentorship program with displaced Yazidi youth and their families.

Thank you for being part of our village.
